12/11/2011 As Bollywood goes global, it was fitting to have Anupam Sharma (pictured), CEO of Film & Casting Temple, and recently voted as one of the 50 most powerful film and media professionals in Australia, address the audience at TiE Sydney's Annual General Meeting (AGM) on December 7, 2011 at the Sydney Hilton.
“The figures are astounding. Enter the phrase 'Bollywood' in any search engine and you will get 50,000 entries. The industry is growing at 20% a year with 1,200 films made every year. We even have a contract with the University of NSW in Sydney for product placement,” Anupam said.
“Making films with Indian centric themes in the world's biggest film industry, is becoming more commercially and creatively attractive. These are characterized by a Western body and an Indian soul,” Anupam said. Typically, production structures and accountancy were provided by Australians while India provided the music, emotions and narrative.
This trend was boosted by the lucrative grants offered by Australia to its film industry and the plethora of creative and commercial possibilities between the two countries. Australia had currently invested more than $50 million in ‘India centric’ projects.
Anupam is film-maker, author and Australia's leading expert on the Indian entertainment sector. He has worked on International projects which include Baz Luhrman’s Moulin Rouge starring Nicole Kidman and is currently producing and directing feature films with renowned producers like Bill Bennett, John Winter and Peter Castaldi.
